We all love seeing our plants bloom, right? Among succulents, cacti are truly special, and today we’re introducing one of the stars of flowering cacti: the cactus with yellow flowers.
It’s not just beautiful—it’s resilient, easy to grow, and can brighten our spaces with color for much of the year. Whether we’re new to gardening or seasoned enthusiasts, this cactus deserves attention.
This cactus belongs to the South Country Jade genus and is widely admired in succulent communities. Its standout feature is the vibrant golden-yellow blooms, which make it highly decorative. Besides its flowers, it’s also low-maintenance and strong, which is why it’s often recommended for beginners. Its small size means it fits nicely in small containers, cups, or on windowsills, making it perfect for indoor spaces.
The cactus is compact and low-growing, usually about 8 centimeters in diameter. Its body is round or slightly cylindrical with 11-15 ribs adorned with radiating spines. Even in a small container, it looks attractive, allowing us to enjoy its shape, spines, and flowers all at once. Its petite size doesn’t stop it from stealing the spotlight!
The flowers are roughly 5 centimeters wide, with multiple layers of petals arranged in a lotus-like pattern. They are translucent, golden, and have a subtle pearl-like sheen. In sunlight, they sparkle as if touched by soft light, adding a lively glow to any corner of our home. Watching these blooms is truly uplifting—it’s like seeing tiny golden suns emerge from our corners of the home.
This cactus is a true “flowering champion.” In regions with mild winters, it can bloom during three seasons of the year. Even when it’s not flowering, it’s usually preparing buds, keeping our space lively and colorful almost constantly. While other cactus varieties bloom sporadically, this one is especially generous, often producing multiple flowers simultaneously.
One of the most delightful traits is that even young, small plants can flower. Initially, blooms appear one at a time, but as the cactus grows, it can open over ten flowers at once. Each flower lasts 3–5 days, giving us enough time to appreciate its beauty. Seeing several golden blooms together creates a truly rewarding visual treat.
Cacti are naturally tough, and this yellow-flowering variety is no exception. It tolerates a range of conditions—cold, humidity, and occasional fertilization—making it very beginner-friendly. With a little attention, it thrives and rewards us with frequent blooms.
We don’t need a large container; just leave 2–3 centimeters around the plant for growth. Soil can be a succulent mix, sandy soil, peat, or humus. Adding small particles like perlite or gravel improves drainage and keeps the cactus healthy.
It prefers bright, indirect sunlight or partial shade. Avoid harsh direct sun, which can be too strong. Ideal spots include south- or east-facing balconies, under eaves, or a well-lit indoor corner. With proper lighting, it grows happily without fuss.
This cactus is drought-tolerant. In spring and autumn, water every 7–10 days. During summer, keep it in a shaded, ventilated, and cool spot and follow a “dry-then-moist” routine. In winter, minimize water and let it rest. Temperatures can drop to about 3°C, but if it goes lower, bring it indoors. Avoid fertilizing during dormancy; come spring, it will bloom again with new vigor.
After flowering, the cactus can produce seeds, though it takes 2–3 years to bloom from seed. Most gardeners prefer offsets, which appear frequently and often bloom in the second year. Propagating these small side shoots is a fun way for us to expand our cactus collection.
Lykkers, the yellow-flowering cactus is more than just a plant—it’s a constant source of color, joy, and satisfaction. Its small size, radiant blooms, and simple care make it perfect for any space. Watching it flower repeatedly reminds us how rewarding gardening can be. With patience and care, this golden beauty will bring brightness to our homes for years.
