Have you ever seen a bridge that carries both cars and trains, rising high above a river with incredible views? Today we're heading to the Cize Viaduct in France's Ain region.
Whether we're train lovers, road trip fans, or just enjoy exploring hidden scenic places, this bridge will definitely impress. Let's explore everything we need to know before visiting this spectacular structure!
Cize-bolozon viaduct
The Cize–Bolozon Viaduct is a two-level bridge in eastern France, crossing the Ain River between the villages of Cize and Bolozon. It's part of the Bourg-en-Bresse–Bellegarde railway line and supports both high-speed TGV trains and local car traffic. The bridge is 896 feet (273 meters) long and about 240 feet (73 meters) tall. Originally built in 1875, it was damaged during the mid-20th century and rebuilt by 1950. In 2010, it became part of the Paris–Geneva TGV route, making it a vital and scenic travel route.
Here's one of the best parts: there's no admission fee to visit the Cize Viaduct. Since it's a functioning bridge with both rail and road traffic, you don't need a ticket or a guide.
- Opening Hours: 24/7 (accessible roads and viewpoints)
- Ticket Price: $0 — totally free!
- Note: Walking on the bridge is not allowed due to safety and active traffic, but we can enjoy it from scenic spots nearby.
By Car:
- From Bourg-en-Bresse: Around 30 minutes (25 km) via D979 and D936
- From Lyon: Around 1 hour 30 minutes (100 km) via A42
- No official parking lots, but you can safely park along village roads in Bolozon or Cize
By Train:
- Take a regional TER train to Cize–Bolozon Station, just minutes away from the bridge
- Or ride a TGV train on the Paris–Geneva route, which actually crosses the viaduct—perfect if we want to experience it from above!
We suggest going during spring (April–June) or autumn (September–October). These seasons bring the most vibrant scenery—green forests in spring and golden valleys in fall.
Best photo hours:
- Early morning (8–10 AM): Soft light, fewer visitors
- Late afternoon (4–6 PM): Warm golden tones, great for photos
- Summer is beautiful too, but can be hotter and busier
- Winter is quiet, but some trails may be slippery or closed
Here are some of the best places to admire or photograph the viaduct:
- Bolozon riverside – gives a full side view of the bridge
- Cize hillside trail – slightly elevated with panoramic views
- Pont de Serrières trail – perfect for distant framing of the viaduct in the landscape
Bring your camera, or even a drone if permitted in the area (check local regulations). Watching a TGV train zoom overhead is truly an unforgettable sight!
- Pack snacks and water – no stores directly at the viaduct
- Download offline maps – cell signal is weak in the valley
- Good walking shoes – helpful if we plan to explore viewpoints
- Check train schedules – to catch a train crossing the bridge for a cool photo
- Nearby sights – like Lac de Nantua or Gorges de l'Ain, great for extending our trip
The Cize Viaduct is more than just a functional bridge—it's a stunning blend of history, engineering, and natural beauty. From the riverside below, we can admire its soaring arches and peaceful surroundings. From the hills above, the view opens up to reveal its full elegance stretching across the valley. It's a quiet gem, far from the usual crowds, and yet it leaves a deep impression on anyone who sees it. Every angle offers a new perspective, making each visit truly memorable.
Lykkers, if a trip through eastern France is on your list, make sure the Cize Viaduct is part of your adventure. Quiet, stunning, and easy on the wallet, it's the perfect spot for memorable moments and photos. We hope this guide sparks your curiosity and helps you plan an amazing visit. Let's keep uncovering the world's hidden gems—one beautiful place at a time. Until we meet again, happy travels from all of us!
